Flight

I’ve climbed to a height,

That has for a lifetime frightened me,

As my phobia manifest,

But in my current state I am fearless,

As if time has erased my memory,

Of all things limiting,

And instead limning,

Freedoms once locked up,

By puerile reckonings,

Baseless things,

That in my mind were well founded,

Confounding my motion

Confining me, completely.

And from this elevation above the clouds,

Clouds that upon a time blocked my sight,

Of the horizon and all its promises,

I witness all of the possibilities,

Promises that tighten in focus,

With ever successive moment,

In which I breathe in the air of this height,

Air that is your essence,

Coming to me aloft a breeze

That is not northern,

But descending,

A warm, sweet wind pressing down,

Upon me from heaven.

I am peering over the ledge of this top,

As I edge closer to the infinite open,

Of sky,

And I dare myself boldly,

To fly,

Risking the safety I now sense,

At the tip of myself,

Edging this cliff,

And I leap.

As I fall through clouds that touch me,

On all sides, softly,

As millions of tiny, wet kisses,

My skin shivers and lives,

Exchanging testimonies of magic,

With my eyes lids forced closed,

Resisting bliss,

And I laugh from deep in my soul,

Falling through emotions with no control,

Winged beings off in the distance,

Mimick me as they dive and dance,

On air that seems thick to the touch,

Of their feathered aerial arms,

And the winged beasts inside me,

Flutter a thousand beats in unison,

With my racing heart.

This ascent and dive begins again,

Each time your spirit crosses me,

At every instance when the phone rings,

When a spoken word begins,

With the same tender sound of your name,

Songs playing in the background,

That raise your image to my foreground,

I am falling,

Filled with the unrest of these tiny wings,

Fluttering unfailingly within me,

Circling, diving, and then climbing,

Coming to a crescendo,

Beneath my heart strings,

Arousing me beyond my understanding,

And softly laying me standing,

For what seems an eternity waiting,

To be stirred again by this love thing.
